Mt. Olive Manufacturing donates $10,000 to Link Observatory Space Science Institute

June 1, 2017 — Mt. Olive Manufacturing, Inc. (Mt. Olive), subsidiary of Creative Foam Corporation (Creative Foam), announced today a $10,000 contribution to the Link Observatory Space Science Institute (the Institute) located in Martinsville, IN.

Mt. Olive began its support for the Institute in July of 2015 with an initial donation of $10,000 and an additional $5,000 contribution in 2016.  Following the acquisition of Mt. Olive by Creative Foam in February of this year, the company pledged to continue their support for the Institute’s community-driven initiatives.

According to the Indiana Department of Education, at a time when STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) jobs are plentiful, the number of students earning STEM degrees and certificates in Indiana has not kept pace with the demand. The Institute is working to change that by inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in STEM fields.  By working with corporate partners such as Mt. Olive, the Institute’s goal is to propel Indiana back to the forefront of STEM education in the nation with dramatically improved educational programs for middle and high school students.  This grant enables the Institute to expand its DiscoverSpace education programs to additional students, including those historically underrepresented in STEM fields.

Kurt Williams, Deputy Director/COO of the Institute said, “STEM fields lack diversity. Women, minorities, disadvantaged and other underrepresented populations are not engaging in these fields and are poorly represented in STEM positions in Indiana and across the nation.  Thanks to generous corporate partners like Mt. Olive, we are able to expand our DiscoverSpace educational programs to reach more of these underrepresented students in Morgan County and beyond to inspire them to pursue careers in STEM fields.”

Many of the students engaged in the DiscoverSpace programs now say they are interested in pursuing a STEM career, and the Institute’s programs are what inspired them to choose that career path.
